Why Does a Dead Phone Strand You Between the Heumarkt and Zülpicher Straße?

Cologne Carnival is not one venue with one gate. The street days spread across the Altstadt around the Heumarkt and Alter Markt, the student district around Zülpicher Straße, and the Südstadt around Chlodwigplatz, and the city has been steering crowds between them for years 4. On 11 November 2023 the city closed every entrance to the Zülpicher Viertel at 9:33 in the morning and reported the Heumarkt full at about 10:16, with around 12,000 people inside 17. Anyone who had not checked a phone before leaving the hotel simply walked into a fence.

That is the real reason to carry data in Cologne. Closures, control points and the stops that KVB skips are announced online, not on the street, and a friend who is on the wrong side of a barrier can only be reached by message. Tickets for a tribune seat or a Heumarkt time window sit in an app. The cards below name the moments when a working connection decided how the evening went for people at earlier editions, from the crush at the Heumarkt to the last tram out of the Altstadt.

How Do You Find Friends After the Entrances Close?

When the Zülpicher Viertel or the Heumarkt reaches capacity, the city stops entry and sends people to other districts 17. Groups that split at a control point have to agree a new meeting spot by message, ideally in the Südstadt or Deutz where space is easier. A shared location pin beats any description of a corner in a crowd of Jecken.

What Do You Do When the Heumarkt Stop Closes?

KVB closes the Rathaus stop from about 7:00 on Weiberfastnacht and shuts the Heumarkt stop if it overfills 6. Your route planner should show the change, but only if it loads. Check the KVB app before you walk down into a station and find the platform sealed.

Where Is the Nearest First-Aid Point at Night?

The city lists first-aid posts at Heumarkt and Alter Markt in the Altstadt and at Roonstraße and Dasselstraße in the Kwartier Latäng, and streetwork teams answer by phone in English 4. Save those numbers before the evening, because nobody can shout a phone number across Zülpicher Straße at midnight.

When Is Cologne Carnival in 2027?

Cologne Carnival 2027 reaches its street peak from Weiberfastnacht on Thursday 4 February 2027 to Veilchendienstag on Tuesday 9 February 2027, with the Rosenmontagszug on Monday 8 February 2027 1. The dates move because the church calendar sets them: Ash Wednesday falls on 10 February 2027, the street carnival always ends the night before, and Weiberfastnacht is the Thursday of that week 1. In 2026 the same week ran from Weiberfastnacht on 12 February to Ash Wednesday on 18 February 4.

  • Thursday 4 February 2027: Weiberfastnacht, the start of the street carnival 1

  • Friday 5 and Saturday 6 February 2027: Karnevalsfreitag and Karnevalssamstag 1

  • Sunday 7 February 2027: Karnevalssonntag and the Schull- un Veedelszöch 1 7

  • Monday 8 February 2027: Rosenmontag and the Rosenmontagszug 1

  • Tuesday 9 February 2027: Veilchendienstag and the Nubbel burning 1 8

The season itself starts far earlier. The Sessionseröffnung takes place on Wednesday 11 November 2026 from 9:00 on the Heumarkt and Alter Markt, with the countdown to 11:11, about 30,000 people expected and WDR broadcasting live from 10:30 to roughly 16:00 9. Festivities pause over Advent and Christmas and resume after 6 January 12. The designated Dreigestirn for the short session is Prinz Marius I., Bauer Alex and Jungfrau Johanna of the Kölner Narren-Zunft von 1880, who hold office for 33 days after their proclamation at the Gürzenich on 8 January 2027 11. The session motto is "Morje es, wat do drus mähs" 11.

If you can only see one thing, pick Rosenmontag. If you want the crowd energy without the parade, pick Weiberfastnacht. Editors have not yet confirmed these dates with the organiser, so check the Festkomitee Kölner Karneval calendar before booking non-refundable travel.

Tip: Cologne also stages an indoor Elfter im Elften concert in the Lanxess Arena on 14 November 2026 at 19:00, with tickets from 59.50 EUR 20. It suits anyone who wants the music without the street crush.

Is the Rosenmontagszug Free to Watch?

Yes, the Rosenmontagszug and the street carnival around it are free to watch, and only tribune seats and organised events cost money 16. Cologne Carnival on Rosenmontag draws more than one million spectators according to the authorities, and standing room along the 8.5 km route is first come, first served 12 2.

Tribune seats are the paid option. The Festkomitee Kölner Karneval and individual carnival societies sell them, and the presale starts in November 2. An undated koeln.de listing shows the Heumarkt West tribune 87.2 from 54 EUR, most Burgmauer, Hohenzollernring and Taubenbrunnen stands from 67 EUR, and the all-inclusive Heumarkt West stand 87.3 at 110 EUR, sold through a ticket.io shop 3. Seating start times vary by stand: the Mühenbach tribune 5 opens at 9:45, Hohenzollernring at 10:45 and Taubenbrunnen at 12:15 3. The listing marks the Hohenzollernring family tribune 34 as not available 3.

The Heumarkt opening on 11 November 2026 uses a mixed model. Reserved ticket spots from 39 EUR and time-window tickets at 11.11 EUR are sold through the Willi-Ostermann-Gesellschaft ticket shop, and the stage programme runs until 20:00 9. A glass ban applies, and Bollerwagen, Pittermännchen, chairs, tables and large bags stay outside 9.

  • Free: standing places along the parade route, the Weiberfastnacht crowds, Veedelszöch on Sunday and Tuesday

  • Paid: tribune seats, Heumarkt reserved spots, indoor Sitzungen and concerts

  • Not allowed in Heumarkt event areas on 11 November 2026: glass, handcarts, chairs, tables, large bags 9

Tip: Treat any tribune price as provisional until the presale opens, because the only list available carries no date.

How Do You Reach the Altstadt from Köln Hbf During Carnival?

Take a train to Köln Hbf and walk or ride the KVB Stadtbahn into the Altstadt, because driving is discouraged on the busy days 16. From Cologne Bonn Airport, the S19 S-Bahn reaches Köln Hbf in about 14 minutes and runs about every 20 minutes 15. The Heumarkt stop is the nearest underground station to the Altstadt stage, and Köln Hbf is a short walk from the Heumarkt 10.

KVB changed its network for the 2026 session, and the pattern is a guide for 2027 6. On Weiberfastnacht the Rathaus stop closed from about 7:00, the Heumarkt stop could be shut when overcrowded, and lines 12 and 15 skipped Zülpicher Platz from 9:00 6. Stadtbahn services ran every 10 minutes until 23:00, every 15 minutes until 2:15, then every 30 minutes 6. On Rosenmontag trams followed the Friday timetable, buses the Sunday timetable, lines 1, 7 and 9 skipped Neumarkt to Heumarkt from 9:30 to 17:00, and line 17 did not run 6.

The 2026 VRS Karnevalsticket cost 32.40 EUR, covered one person from Weiberfastnacht through Veilchendienstag, and was sold in the VRS app and the KVB web shop 6.

The Zülpicher Viertel is fenced. In 2026 the city made the Kwartier Latäng a controlled zone with a main entrance at Zülpicher Straße and Zülpicher Wall, plus entrances at Roonstraße and Beethovenstraße and at Kyffhäuserstraße and Barbarossaplatz 4. Music boxes and bulky items such as handcarts were banned, and the Uniwiese served as a relief area without music or alcohol 4. The glass ban in the Kwartier Latäng ran from 8:00 on Weiberfastnacht, from 15:00 on Karnevalsfreitag, from 12:00 on Saturday and from 15:00 on Rosenmontag until 8:00 the next morning, and smuggling glass in risked a fine of up to 60 EUR 5.

  • Airport: S19 to Köln Hbf, about 14 minutes 15

  • Altstadt: Heumarkt stop, unless KVB closes it 6

  • Zülpicher Straße: only through the control points, with no glass 4 5

Tip: The crowds have moved toward the Altstadt, the Südstadt and Chlodwigplatz since 2024, so Zülpicher Straße is no longer the only place to be 4.

What Happens on Each Day from Weiberfastnacht to Veilchendienstag?

Weiberfastnacht opens the street carnival, Rosenmontag brings the parade, and Veilchendienstag closes with the Nubbel. On Weiberfastnacht the 2026 opening was set for 11:11 on the Heumarkt, with Alter Markt as a second hotspot, and the party then moved into the Veedel pubs and the Zülpicher Viertel 16. By custom, women take charge that day and men who lose a tie are paid back with a Bützje, a friendly kiss on the cheek 18.

On Karnevalssonntag, 7 February 2027, the Schull- un Veedelszöch leave Chlodwigplatz at 11:11, with assembly from 8:00 on Karolingerring, Sachsenring and Ubierring 7. The 2026 route reached Tunisstraße in the Altstadt-Nord via Severinstraße, Schildergasse, Neumarkt, Hohenzollernring, Heumarkt and Alter Markt, with about 90 school and neighbourhood groups and over 8,000 people 7. It is the family parade, and groups walk with little money and a lot of homemade costume 7.

On Rosenmontag, 8 February 2027, the Rosenmontagszug starts at 10:00 on Chlodwigplatz in the Südstadt and ends at Gregorius-Maurus-Straße after 8.5 km, with the head of the procession arriving at about 13:45 2. The 2026 procession had 74 festival floats, 21 satirical Persiflagewagen, 1,122 musicians in 60 bands and about 11,500 participants 2. Spectators shout "Kamelle!" and catch some of the 300 tonnes of sweets, 700,000 chocolate bars, 220,000 boxes of pralines and 300,000 Strüßjer bouquets 2. In Cologne you call out Alaaf, never Helau 18.

Veilchendienstag, 9 February 2027, belongs to the neighbourhoods: Veedelszöch run in Ehrenfeld, the Südstadt, Nippes and Deutz, and in the evening the Nubbel is burned outside many pubs with the line "Der Nubbel ist schuld!" 8.

The pubs set the rhythm between parades. A 1986 agreement among 24 Cologne-area brewers, the Kölsch-Konvention, limited the Kölsch name to Cologne breweries and defined how the beer is brewed 13. The Köbes carries 11 or 12 Stangen on a round tray called a Kranz and replaces each empty glass without being asked, so say stop with the coaster and pay for the ticks 13. At the Heumarkt opening, Kölsch is sold from drink stands, and the organiser says its price has not changed since the previous year 9.

  • Drink Kölsch from the 200 ml Stange; the Köbes adds a tick to your coaster for each glass and stops only when you lay the coaster on top 13

  • Kölsch is 4.4 to 5.2 percent alcohol by volume 13

  • The Jungfrau in the Dreigestirn is traditionally played by a man 12

Note: The programme that applies to 2027 is the date pattern; times above come from the 2026 edition and can change.

How Cold Is Cologne on the Rosenmontagszug Route in February?

February in Cologne is cold and damp, with an average high of 9.5 C, an average low of 2.5 C and a mean of 6.1 C at the Köln/Bonn station 14. The same station records 56 mm of precipitation, 16 rain days and 76 hours of sunshine in February on average over the last five years 14. Cologne Carnival 2027 on 8 February is therefore a day for layers, waterproof shoes and a hood, not an umbrella that blocks the view of the people behind you.

Standing time is the real cold. The Rosenmontagszug starts at 10:00 and the head of the parade reaches the end at about 13:45, so a spot near Chlodwigplatz can mean several hours on cold stone 2. Tribune stands are covered in places, which matters on a wet day 2.

Arrive earlier than you think. On the opening day in 2023 the Heumarkt was reported full at 10:16 with about 12,000 people, and the Zülpicher Viertel had been closed since 9:33 17. The session opening in 2026 starts at 9:00 9. The crowd for Weiberfastnacht and Rosenmontag is the heaviest of the year, with the authorities counting more than one million spectators for the Rosenmontagszug 12.

Green spaces have rules too. In 2026 the Inner Green Belt between Luxemburger Straße and Aachener Straße had a glass ban from 10:00 to 20:00 on Weiberfastnacht and from 11:00 to 22:00 each day from Friday to Rosenmontag, and the Uniwiese worked as a smaller relief area with bins and toilets 4. Under-16s may not carry alcohol, and from 16 beer, wine and sparkling wine are allowed but spirits are not 4.

  • Arrive on the parade route well before the 10:00 start for a front-row spot

  • Wear a costume over thermal layers; Cologne treats a costume as part of the dress code 16

  • Pack a PET bottle, not glass, for the zones with a glass ban 5

Tip: A wind warning can stop a parade, so check the Festkomitee Kölner Karneval and city channels on the morning of the procession.

Which Cologne Neighbourhood Is the Best Base for Carnival Week?

The Südstadt is the most useful base, because the Rosenmontagszug and the Schull- un Veedelszöch start on Chlodwigplatz and the district hosts one of the Veilchendienstag Veedelszöch 2 7 8. Book months ahead, because hotel prices can double in carnival week 16.

The Altstadt puts you beside the Heumarkt and Alter Markt, but it is the loudest and most crowded area on Weiberfastnacht and Rosenmontag, and the glass ban runs from 8:00 on Weiberfastnacht 5. Staying there means you can walk home when trams skip stops, though you can also find yourself behind a barrier at 9:00 6.

The area around Zülpicher Straße, the Kwartier Latäng, is a student party district that the city fences and controls on carnival days, and residents need ID to pass the control points 4. A hotel inside the zone is only worth it if you want to be in the middle of it. The city counts about 670 mobile toilets there for roughly 1,000 across the city, so noise, queues and closed streets are all part of the stay 4.

Deutz and the Schäl Sick across the Rhine are calmer, have their own Veilchendienstag Veedelszug, and host the family-friendly Kölsche Countdown at the Tanzbrunnen on 11 November 2026 8 19. Ehrenfeld and Nippes are residential neighbourhoods with their own Veedelszöch and local pubs, but the tram ride to the Altstadt can be slow on the busiest days.

Compare hotel rates as early as possible, because carnival week is the most expensive time to book 16. If rooms in the city are full, a hotel along an S-Bahn or Stadtbahn line outside the centre still reaches Köln Hbf, but the last connections run less often after 2:15, when Stadtbahn services drop to every 30 minutes 6.

  • Südstadt: closest to the Rosenmontagszug start, easy walk to the Severinsviertel pubs

  • Altstadt: walking distance to the Heumarkt and Alter Markt, loudest nights

  • Deutz: quieter, across the Rhine, near the Tanzbrunnen

Tip: Choose a base that lets you walk to a KVB line that is not closed, because the Rathaus and Heumarkt stops can close on Weiberfastnacht 6.

What Happens to Your Phone Signal on Zülpicher Straße and the Heumarkt?

Expect slow data wherever tens of thousands of Jecken stand together, such as the Heumarkt, where about 30,000 people are expected at the session opening on 11 November 2026 9. No official signal measurements exist for the carnival zones, so plan for the network to be slow rather than assume it will work.

An eSIM installed before you leave home keeps the phone online the moment you land at Köln Hbf or at Cologne Bonn Airport, and the Germany eSIM page lists the options. That matters because KVB changes, the Karnevalsticket and the Guardy-Alert app recommended by the Heumarkt event all run on the phone 6 10.

Save these contacts offline before you go, using the city's published list for the 2026 carnival 4:

  • Police emergency: 110; if you suspect knockout drops, go straight to the police 4

  • Streetwork for the Zülpicher Viertel: 0173/887 34 80; for the Altstadt: 0152/54 54 79 86 4

  • EDELGARD counselling on sexualised violence: 0221/221-27777; the national violence-against-women helpline: 116 016 4

  • Lost property at Ottmar-Pohl-Platz 1 in Kalk, open on Weiberfastnacht 8:00 to 11:00 and on Veilchendienstag 8:00 to 12:00 and 13:00 to 16:00, closed on Rosenmontag 4

Screenshot your tribune ticket, hotel address and meeting point, and agree a fallback place with your group in case the Zülpicher Viertel closes. Download the offline map for Cologne before you go.

Tip: Keep the phone in an inside pocket; a crowd on Zülpicher Straße is also where phones disappear.

Frequently asked questions

Say Alaaf. Alaaf is the Cologne carnival greeting, and Helau is unwelcome in the city, so greeting people with it marks you as a visitor from another carnival region 18. The word may come from “al aaf”, meaning everything gone, though its origin is not certain. Shout “Kölle Alaaf!” when the countdown hits 11:11 at the session opening, and “Kamelle!” when a float passes 9 18.

No. The Kwartier Latäng around Zülpicher Straße has a glass ban during carnival, and smuggling glass into a zone risked a fine of up to 60 EUR in 2026 5. PET bottles, plastic cups and cans are allowed, and you can decant a drink into plastic at the control points 4 5. The Heumarkt events add their own bans on handcarts, chairs and large bags 9.

The Nubbel is a straw figure that is hung above pubs and burned on the night of Veilchendienstag to end the carnival 12. It carries the blame for everything done during the carnival, which is why Cologne pubs shout “Der Nubbel ist schuld!” as it burns 8. The Nubbelverbrennung in 2027 falls on the night of 9 February, before Ash Wednesday on 10 February 1.

Mostly sweets. The Rosenmontagszug distributes about 300 tonnes of Kamelle, 700,000 chocolate bars, 220,000 boxes of pralines and 300,000 Strüßjer bouquets, which people often hand over in return for a Bützje 2 18. Shout “Kamelle!” and hold out a bag. Flowers, toys and footballs also fly, so keep your phone in a pocket and your eyes on the float.

Yes, if you choose the right days. The Schull- un Veedelszöch on Karnevalssonntag, 7 February 2027, is the family parade, with school groups and neighbourhood clubs 7. Avoid Weiberfastnacht and the Zülpicher Viertel with small children. People under 16 may not carry alcohol, and the city runs youth-protection checks on kiosks during the street days 4.

Plan for a normal city day plus ticket apps, maps, KVB updates and messages, but no organiser publishes a data allowance for the carnival 6. The bigger risk is signal rather than volume, since tens of thousands gather at the Heumarkt 9. An eSIM from the Germany eSIM page installed before the flight keeps you online on arrival, and offline maps help when the network is slow.
