Why Does a Phone Ticket Matter at the Whittier Park Gate?

At Festival du Voyageur the entry ticket is a QR code on your phone, and a code that will not load in a freezing queue is a real problem. The organiser sells tickets online, at the festival office on Provencher Boulevard and at the park box office, but it recommends buying ahead because some days can sell out 2. Each electronic ticket can be scanned only once, so a screenshot shared with a friend does not work twice 2.

The ticket also controls how you move during the day. Ticketed visitors may leave the park and return within their time slot, but only after collecting a stamp at the Information Centre 2. Add the shuttle you will wait for, the concert at the Centre culturel franco-manitobain that needs its own separate ticket 2, and a Saint Boniface map you may want after dark, and the case for a working data connection from the airport onwards is easy to see. Hunting for Wi-Fi outdoors in a Winnipeg February is not a plan.

How Do You Find Friends Between Tente Forest and Tente Riviere Rouge?

Whittier Park spreads 15 hectares across several heated tents, a craft market and Fort Gibraltar 10 12. In 2026 the programme ran across Tente Forest, Tente Riviere Rouge, the Terrasse a chansons and two historic houses 12. A group that splits up for different bands needs a shared live location, because a shouted "he ho" will not carry across a snowy field.

Where Do You Pay When the Bar Takes Cards Only?

Tickets and bar purchases at the festival are cashless, with debit or credit only, while food vendors and merchants may still take cash 2. A phone wallet that cannot reach the network is no use at the Terrasse a chansons bar, so check that your card or wallet is ready before you leave the hotel.

What Does the Free Shuttle Need From Your Phone?

The organiser advises visitors to use the free shuttle, carpool or take a cab because parking is very limited 2. Late on a weeknight, a ride request from Provencher Boulevard back to downtown is the moment a live connection pays off.

The complete guide

When Is Festival du Voyageur in 2027?

Festival du Voyageur is set for 12 to 21 February 2027 and is the 58th edition, according to the organiser's own pages 1 3. The ten days cover the Manitoba holiday weekend, with Louis Riel Day falling on Monday 15 February 2027 3 20. The organiser lists the dates, but the daily hours and the programme have not been posted yet 1.

Louis Riel Day is always the third Monday of February, and the festival has wrapped around that holiday weekend in recent editions 20. The 2026 edition ran from Friday 13 to Sunday 22 February 2026 2. If you are checking an older year, the 2025 edition drew 67,380 people 7.

Festival du Voyageur 2027 at Whittier Park in Winnipeg is not a continuous ten-day open house. On school-programme days the park is closed to the public during programme hours, which the organiser gives as 9:00 to 15:00 4. In 2027 those school days are Friday 12 February and Tuesday 16 to Friday 19 February 4. The festival says this is to protect the safety of attending students 4.

The organiser's school-programme page also lists the days in each language, with French on Friday 12 and Wednesday 17 February 2027 and English on Tuesday 16, Thursday 18 and Friday 19 February 2027 4. Those closures are the main reason a weekday daytime visit may not work.

  • Best days for first-timers: the two weekends, when the park runs long hours

  • Quieter option: weekday evenings, when the park reopens after the school programme

  • Holiday Monday: the Louis-Riel Day Market runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. 3

Tip: The organiser has not yet posted 2027 daily hours, so build your trip around the weekend of 13 and 14 February 2027 or 20 and 21 February 2027, then confirm the hours on the festival site before booking a flight 1.

Which Whittier Park Ticket Do You Need for a Saturday Night?

The organiser has not put 2027 tickets on sale and has not published prices, so any figure you see elsewhere is from a past year 1. When sales open, you can buy online at heho.ca, at the festival office at 233 Provencher Boulevard, or at the park box office, subject to availability 1.

The 2026 edition sold three kinds of ticket: day (10 a.m. to midnight), evening (6 p.m. to midnight) and day plus evening, and added a weekend pass for the first time 2. Tickets were not valid on every day, so check the date printed on yours. Children aged 5 and under entered free 2.

Two rules catch visitors out. First, a park ticket does not include concerts at the Centre culturel franco-manitobain, and a concert ticket does not include the park 2. Second, sales are final, although tickets are transferable 2. A limited special ticket for Saturday 21 February 2026 gave priority entry to Tente Riviere Rouge with guaranteed access to four named acts 12.

Tickets are sold as electronic codes, so a charged phone matters as much as the price. Food vendors and merchants inside the park may accept cash, which makes a small amount of Canadian currency worth carrying for a pea soup or a taffy stick 2.

  • Pay with a card: tickets and bar purchases are cashless 2

  • Re-entry: get a stamp at the Information Centre first 2

  • Scanning: each electronic ticket scans once 2

Tip: Buy ahead for the Saturday evening, since the organiser warns that some days can sell out 1. For ticket help on site, the Info Centre phone number is (204) 233-2556 2.

How Do You Reach Whittier Park From Winnipeg Airport?

Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport is at 2000 Wellington Avenue, and you travel from there by taxi, ride-hailing or Winnipeg Transit to Saint Boniface, which sits across the Red River from downtown 15 17. Winnipeg Transit serves the airport, and the city recommends its Navigo trip planner because the whole network was redesigned in 2025 15 19.

The airport has direct service to Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, Montreal and Ottawa, plus Minneapolis, Chicago and Denver on the U.S. side 15. Visa-exempt foreigners who fly in need an eTA, which costs 7 CAD, is valid for up to five years and is usually approved within minutes 14. Land arrivals do not need one 14.

For the festival itself the organiser says parking at Whittier Park is very limited, the lot costs 10 CAD and there is no free parking, so it recommends the free shuttle, carpooling or a cab 2. The organiser has not yet posted the 2027 shuttle route or stops, so check its site before you travel 1.

Winnipeg Transit's 2026 adult fare is 3.45 CAD in cash and 3.10 CAD in e-cash, and a Peggo card costs a one-time 5 CAD 13.

  • From the airport: taxi or ride-hailing to your hotel first, then use the shuttle

  • From downtown: walk or bus over the Esplanade Riel footbridge to Saint Boniface 18

  • Driving: use carpooling, not the 10 CAD lot 2

Tip: Drop luggage downtown or on Provencher Boulevard before heading into the park, because there is no free parking for rental cars 2.

Which Tent Hosts What at Festival du Voyageur?

The 2027 programme is not yet published, but the 2026 listing shows how the park is organised 1 12. Tente Riviere Rouge held bands, DJs and the Ensemble folklorique de la Riviere-Rouge, while Tente Forest hosted singer-songwriters 12. The Terrasse a chansons was the acoustic stage and Maison Chaboillez ran cooking parties 12.

Inside the palisade, Fort Gibraltar is the heart of the festival. The fort is a 1978 reconstruction of the North West Company post that first stood at The Forks in 1809 8 9. Costumed interpreters work in a fur-trading store, a voyageurs' winter cabin, a blacksmith shop and a storeroom 11. You can watch blacksmithing, snowshoe frame making and cooking over an open fire 11.

Around the fort there is also a games line-up. Voyageur games include leg wrestling, tug of war, log sawing and wood carving, and fiddling and jigging contests run too, the jig being a dance the Metis developed in the mid-1800s 11. An international snow sculpture symposium draws teams from around the world to the park 11.

In 2025 the festival presented about 181 artists on 7 stages across 282 hours 7.

  • Morning: school programme days are closed to the public 4

  • Evening: in 2026 the bands, DJs and folk dance ensembles filled the tents after dark 12

  • Weekends: the long days with the most activity 2

Tip: Walk through Fort Gibraltar first, in daylight, because the interpreters work through the day and the crowds peak at night.

How Cold Is Whittier Park in Mid-February?

February in Winnipeg is cold and dry: the mean daily maximum at the airport is -8.8 °C, the mean is -14.1 °C and the mean minimum is -19.3 °C 16. The record low is -45.0 °C, and about twelve days a year bring a wind chill below -40 °C 16. Snowfall averages 11.8 cm in the month and sunshine about 133.9 hours 16.

The festival does not close for cold. Festival du Voyageur at Whittier Park in Winnipeg uses heated tents, bonfires for marshmallows and horse-drawn sleigh rides, so you move between warm and freezing air all day 11. The park is large and open, so wind off the Red River is the real issue, not the temperature 10.

What to wear, in order:

  1. A thermal base layer, then a wool or fleece mid layer

  2. A windproof parka rated well below the mean minimum

  3. Insulated, waterproof boots with a grip sole

  4. A toque, a scarf that covers your face and mittens rather than gloves

  5. A spare pair of socks and hand warmers for the long evening

For a festive touch locals wear a red toque, plaid flannel or a ceinture flechee, a finger-woven sash sold at the craft market 11.

Tip: Dress for the walk between the tents, not the tent itself, and carry a light layer you can strip off indoors, because the heated tents are warm enough to make you sweat 11.

Which Winnipeg Neighbourhood Puts You Closest to Provencher Boulevard?

Saint Boniface is the closest base, since it is the centre of the Franco-Manitoban community and holds Whittier Park, the Centre culturel franco-manitobain and the festival office 2 17. Staying along Boulevard Provencher means a short walk to the Relais du Voyageur at 340 Provencher Boulevard 2.

The second choice is downtown near The Forks. The Esplanade Riel pedestrian bridge links downtown with Saint Boniface, so a downtown room can be walkable in daytime, though a February night is a reason to take a cab or the shuttle 18 16. Downtown also has the larger choice of rooms and the closer links to the airport 15.

The Forks, where the Red and Assiniboine rivers meet, draws more than four million visitors each year, which keeps downtown busy 18. For the festival itself the practical advice is to reserve early for the weekends of 12 to 14 February 2027 and 19 to 21 February 2027, because the holiday weekend is a natural time for a visit 1 20.

Saint Boniface is also where Louis Riel was born and where the cathedral, the Universite de Saint-Boniface and the Royal Canadian Mint stand, so a hotel there lets you see the neighbourhood by day as well 17.

  • Closest: Boulevard Provencher in Saint Boniface, near the cathedral and Centre culturel 2 17

  • Largest choice: downtown, with a bus or footbridge link 18

  • Cheapest option: a room further out with a car or shuttle plan, since a car park at the park is 10 CAD and very limited 2

Tip: Choose lodging with a warm lobby and a short, plowed walk to the shuttle stop rather than the cheapest room.

Will Your Phone Hold a Signal Between the Tents at Whittier Park?

The open 15-hectare park fills with ticket scanners, shuttle queues and photo uploads on busy evenings, so do not count on a fast shared connection 10 2. Cold also drains batteries faster, so a phone that works from the airport to the tent still needs a warm pocket and a power bank.

Install an eSIM before you fly. Canada's carriers are covered on a Canada eSIM plan, which you can set up on the flight and switch on when you land. The airport terminal offers free Wi-Fi, which is fine for the first message home but is not a plan for a week of maps, tickets and ride requests 15.

The festival's tents are heated and the walks between them are short, but the Information Centre stamp, the shuttle queue and a late ride home all depend on your phone being alive and connected. A power bank kept inside your coat outlasts one left in a bag,, because phone batteries drain faster in the cold.

Four tasks that need data at the festival:

  • Loading the QR ticket at the gate, which scans only once 2

  • Checking the shuttle and the Winnipeg Transit app after a concert 19

  • Sharing a live location when the group splits between tents

  • Paying with a phone wallet at card-only counters 2

Tip: Keep your phone inside your coat while you queue, and screenshot your ticket only as a backup, since the organiser scans each electronic ticket once 2.

Which Voyageur Foods Are Worth Queueing For at Whittier Park?

Food at Festival du Voyageur leans on French-Canadian and Metis cooking: tourtiere (meat pie), pea soup, maple sugar pie, bison on bannock and poutine 11. Other options include baked beans, pulled pork, pancakes, beavertails (fried dough), mini donuts and candy apples 11.

The two items people queue for are maple taffy and caribou. For taffy, hot maple syrup is poured onto ice and rolled onto a stick 11. Caribou is the signature drink, a mulled-wine-style blend of red wine, whiskey or brandy and maple syrup, served warm or cold 11. Hot chocolate is available if you prefer something without alcohol 11.

Order the heavier dishes first and the sweets last, because a hot soup or pie warms you faster than sugar does when the daily mean sits near -14.1 °C 16. The tents with food stalls are also the warmest places to stand, so a meal doubles as a rest between outdoor stretches of the programme 11.

A free pancake breakfast ran at Tente Forest on Sunday 22 February 2026 from 10:00 to 11:00 12. Check whether it returns on the closing Sunday, 21 February 2027 1.

  • Warm up with: pea soup and tourtiere in the tents 11

  • Try once: bison on bannock, the item on the list closest to Metis cooking 11

  • Sweet stop: maple taffy, rolled on snow 11

Tip: Carry some cash, because food vendors and merchants may take cash even though tickets and bar purchases are cashless 2.

What Does Hé Ho Mean at Festival du Voyageur?

"He ho" is the festival cheer, and visitors are expected to shout it back 11. The festival is bilingual, so you do not need French to enjoy it 11. A few words such as bonjour and merci still go a long way on Provencher Boulevard.

The festival began in 1970 as part of Manitoba's centenary, after Saint Boniface citizens proposed it in 1967 5. Georges Forest became the first Official Voyageur in 1970 by dressing in voyageur clothing, a custom that continues 5. The Official Voyageur is the festival's ambassador, a role that dates to the first festival 6. The 2026 to 2027 Official Voyageurs are the Brown family 6.

The mascot, Leo La Tuque, was inspired by a snow sculpture of a toque and boots that won a contest in 1971 and became the mascot in 1972 5. The festival moved to Whittier Park in 1977 when Provencher Park became too small 5.

Louis Riel, the Metis leader who headed the provisional government during the Red River Resistance, was born in Saint Boniface and is buried in the churchyard of Saint Boniface Cathedral 17 20. Manitoba recognised Louis Riel Day as a provincial holiday in 2007 20.

  • Do: respect school-programme closures and the Metis heritage on show

  • Do: wear a toque or sash if you want to join in

  • Avoid: treating the fort as a costume backdrop; interpreters are describing First Nations and fur-trade history 9

Tip: Visit the cathedral churchyard on Louis Riel Day to see why the festival and the holiday sit on the same weekend 20.

Frequently asked questions

Not during programme hours. Parc du Voyageur is closed to the public from 9:00 to 15:00 on school days, and the 2027 school days are Friday 12 February and Tuesday 16 to Friday 19 February 2027 4. In 2026 the park reopened at 6 p.m. on Thursday 19 February 2. Wait for the organiser's 2027 hours before you plan a weekday visit.

No. The festival is bilingual, and you do not need French to take part in the fort, the tents or the market 11. Signs, performances and staff in Saint Boniface mix English and French, so a simple bonjour is welcome but not required. Fiddling, jigging and snow sculpture need no translation at all.

Yes, within your ticket time slot, but only after you stop at the Information Centre for a stamp 2. Each electronic ticket can be scanned only once, so the stamp is your proof of re-entry. Tickets are transferable but sales are final, so do not buy a day you may not use 2.

No. Park tickets do not include concert access at the Centre culturel franco-manitobain at 340 Provencher Boulevard, and concert tickets do not include park access 2. If you want both a day in Whittier Park and an evening show at the Relais du Voyageur, plan to buy two separate tickets.

It is a one-day craft market in Tente Riviere Rouge on Monday 15 February 2027, held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. 3. It sits beside the main festival and coincides with Manitoba's Louis Riel Day, a provincial holiday observed on the third Monday of February 20. The Tente de souvenirs hosts the main market on other days 3.

The festival needs a working data connection for QR tickets, the shuttle and a group location, but the organiser publishes no usage figure 2. Install an eSIM before you fly so the phone connects the moment you land, and keep the battery warm, because cold drains it quickly in a Winnipeg February 16.
