Losing Signal on Avenida Amazonas During the Gran Ronda Quiteña

The Gran Ronda Quiteña is the one big procession listed for the 2026 peak, and it runs along Avenida Amazonas from El Ejido to Naciones Unidas, a stretch of several kilometres that you will want to move along with the chivas, comparsas and floats 10. That is exactly where phones struggle: thousands of people film the same float, post the same canelazo stall and call the same friends. In 2025 the municipality counted 294,000 participants across all its parades, fairs and festivals, and a procession on a main avenue draws a large share of them 9.

Quito sits at 2,850 metres, the nights are cold, and the afternoon often ends in rain, so you do not want to wander lost on foot 14. A working connection tells you which cross street is still open, where the nearest Metro exit is, and whether the stage with Tercer Mundo has started 10. It also keeps your ticket QR codes, your hotel address and your ride-hailing app within reach when the street is full and your paper map is soaked.

Checking Chiva Departure Points Before the Queue Forms

Public chivas leave from fixed points such as Avenida Naciones Unidas and Iñaquito or Parque Bicentenario, and the list changes between years 1. A quick look at the operator's page or social account before you walk over saves a wasted trip, especially when a reporter in a past edition waited about an hour and a half for a ride that lasted 25 minutes 13.

Finding Friends When Calle Reina Victoria Fills Up

Streets such as Calama and Reina Victoria near Plaza Foch still hold the bars with music, and a shared location pin beats shouting into a crowd 18. Drop the pin before the first canelazo, because one lost phone battery can split a group for the night.

Booking a Ride Home After the Last Metro Train

The Metro de Quito closed at 22:00 on Sundays and 23:00 on Saturdays in December 2025, well before a chiva night ends 20. After that you need a taxi or ride-hailing app, and neither works without data.

When Is Fiestas de Quito in 2026?

The core of Fiestas de Quito 2026 is 1 to 6 December, with the city's founding anniversary on Sunday 6 December 12. The date is fixed because Quito marks 6 December 1534, the day Sebastián de Benalcázar refounded the city at its present site 14.

The wider programme starts earlier. The Fundación Reina de Quito says the election of the Reina de San Francisco de Quito 2026-2027 is planned for Wednesday 25 November 2026 at Teatro Bolívar, and that the city's festivities begin with it 11. The municipality has not yet published the full 2026 agenda, so the day-by-day plan below follows the pattern of 2025, when events ran from 19 November to 6 December 6.

The Gran Ronda Quiteña is listed on Avenida Amazonas for Saturday 5 December 2026, with the exact start time still to be confirmed on the ticketing page 10.

Because 6 December 2026 falls on a Sunday, the local rest day for the anniversary is expected to move to the Friday before or the Monday after; Ecuadorian rules shift Quito's local holiday that way, and in 2025 it moved from Saturday 6 December to Friday 5 December 12. The holiday applies only to the Metropolitan District of Quito 12.

  • Evergreen anchor: 6 December, every year.

  • Peak window: 1 to 6 December 2026.

  • Start of the programme: Reina election, 25 November 2026 11.

Tip: Check the municipal agenda at cultura.quito.gob.ec in the last week of November, because the 2025 programme was published only on 17 November 6.

How Much Does a Chiva Ride Cost in Quito?

Public chiva rides cost about USD 5 per person in 2025, and a private two-hour rental for up to 45 people cost USD 350 to 500 1. A chiva is a truck with a bucket-like rear compartment fitted for standing passengers, with coloured lights, speakers and, on many, a live DJ and canelazo 2.

Public chivas leave from set points. In 2025 the listed departure points were Avenida Naciones Unidas e Iñaquito, Parque Bicentenario, Tribuna del Sur and the Plataforma Gubernamental Sur 1. In 2024 the municipality also named the Basílica, the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo and Avenida Naciones Unidas y Japón as boarding and drop-off sites 3. A past visitor boarded at the Basílica del Voto Nacional for a one-hour city tour and found the street food and crowd in the park in front of it 13.

Chivas from outside the capital, especially Baños, arrive in December because demand is high 1. The AMT, the city transit agency, inspected 98 chivas in 2024, suspended four and held two 3. Passengers may no longer ride on the roof 2.

Scams are the real risk. In 2025 the president of the Asociación de Chivas San Francisco de Quito reported about 20 complaints in one week from people who paid deposits to fake operators advertising 45 seats for USD 120 to 150 1.

  • Book through an operator with a verifiable page, not a bare Marketplace post.
  • Pay a deposit only for a price close to the market range.
  • Ask which chiva will pick you up and its name; each chiva carries one 2.
  • Confirm what the price includes: some rides add canelazo, masks, whistles and a live DJ, others only the bus 1.

The Gran Ronda Quiteña itself is listed as a free event, and the listing says it includes free canelazo and a competition of años viejos effigies 10.

How Do You Get From Mariscal Sucre Airport to Parque La Carolina?

From Quito's Mariscal Sucre International Airport, a taxi to the north of the city costs USD 20 to 28 and takes about 40 minutes without traffic, or 55 to 60 minutes in heavy traffic (February 2025) 17. Some drivers offer a fixed USD 25 fare from the north or south of the city 17.

Buses are cheaper but awkward with luggage. Three urban lines reach the airport from Quitumbe in the south, Carcelén in the north and the Río Coca station of the Ecovía system, at USD 2.45 in 2025 17. The airport shuttle to Parque Bicentenario no longer runs after its operator closed 17.

Once you are in the city, Parque La Carolina is easy to reach by Metro. La Carolina station is underground at Avenida Eloy Alfaro and Avenida de La República, in the southern part of the park, and has four exits 15. Iñaquito station serves the north end, and the park covers about 67 hectares between Avenida Río Amazonas, Avenida de los Shyris, Avenida Naciones Unidas, Avenida Eloy Alfaro and Avenida de la República 16.

The Metro line runs from Quitumbe in the south to El Labrador in the north 15. Because the Metro is underground and avoids the avenue closures, it is the most predictable way to reach the park on an event day. Hours in December 2025 were 05:30 to 23:00 on weekdays, 07:00 to 23:00 on Saturdays and 07:00 to 22:00 on Sundays 20.

  • Plaza Foch is in La Mariscal, close to Calama and Reina Victoria streets 18.

  • Avenida Amazonas is the axis of the Gran Ronda Quiteña, from El Ejido to Naciones Unidas 10.

  • The Centro Histórico is the setting for the pregón, the Serenata and La Ronda street 4 6.

Tip: Closures can start in the afternoon. In 2023 the AMT closed intersections along Juan León Mera in La Mariscal from 13:00 for a festival day, so plan alternatives such as Avenida Colón or Avenida Patria 7.

What Happens Between the Reina Election and the Sesión Solemne?

The programme builds from the Reina election to the Sesión Solemne, and the 2025 calendar shows the order 6. In 2025 the Te Deum at the Basílica de la Merced came on 19 November, schools greeted the city on 20 November, the Desfile de la Confraternidad ran on 22 November at Parque Bicentenario and the Desfile del Sur on 23 November 6.

The Desfile de los Mercados ran on 26 November 2025 from Parque Benito Juárez to Plaza San Francisco, and the pregón in the Centro Histórico followed on 27 November 5. Quitofest took place at Parque Bicentenario from 28 to 30 November 2025, with a night mascarada on Avenida Amazonas on 30 November 5. The final week included the Festival del Pasacalle at Coliseo Rumiñahui on 2 December, the Serenata Quiteña on 5 December and the Sesión Solemne on 6 December 5.

For 2026 the municipality has not published this calendar yet, but two items are already visible: the Reina election on 25 November and the Gran Ronda Quiteña on 5 December 10 11.

The traditions around the programme are older than the schedule. Concerts start about two weeks before 6 December and continue afterwards, children race wooden go-karts down steep streets, and the card game cuarenta is played in squares and cafés 4 13. The celebrations date from 1959 13.

  • Eat at the Sal Quiteña food festival, which ran at Parque Bicentenario on 5 and 6 December 2025 with free entry in exchange for a food donation 8.
  • Drink canelazo, a hot mix of cinnamon, naranjilla, sugar and aguardiente, with a non-alcoholic version 4 13.
  • Walk La Ronda for empanadas de viento and morocho 4.
  • Try encebollado, a fish soup that locals eat for breakfast after a late night 13.

Note: Free concerts at Plaza San Francisco and similar squares fill early, so arrive well before the headline act 13.

Museums stay open longer during the festivities, and many events are free, so a day without a ticket is realistic 13. The city and nearby towns are decorated in Quito's red and blue, and "Que viva Quito" is the usual greeting and chant 13. Concerts have used the Ágora of the Casa de la Cultura, the Coliseo Rumiñahui, Parque Itchimbía and Parque Bicentenario in past editions, so check which of them hosts your date 4.

How Wet and Cold Is Quito in Early December?

Quito's December averages are a daily high of 20.2°C, a low of 8.6°C and 93.6 mm of rain, measured at the airport weather station 14. The city sits at 2,850 metres, so the sun is strong at midday and the evenings turn cold fast 14.

December starts the wetter season. At the first day of Quitofest on 28 November 2025 the sky clouded over after 14:00, and the first rain reached Parque Bicentenario at around 14:40, sending the crowd to shelter beside the stages 19. The municipality expected about 25,000 people per day at that festival, and umbrellas were not allowed in 19.

On an anniversary Sunday the city feels busy but not frantic in the morning, and crowds build in the afternoon and evening. One visitor found that city-centre events had finished by mid-afternoon on a parade day 13.

  • Pack a light waterproof or a plastic poncho, because umbrellas can be refused at big venues 19.

  • Wear layers: a T-shirt for midday and a jacket from 18:00.

  • Bring sunscreen and a hat; the altitude intensifies the sun 14.

Tip: Plan outdoor sightseeing for the morning and keep the afternoon flexible for rain, then go to the Gran Ronda Quiteña in the evening 10.

Is La Mariscal or La Carolina the Better Base for a Chiva Night?

La Mariscal puts you closest to Plaza Foch and the bars of Calama and Reina Victoria, while La Carolina puts you next to the Metro and the park 18 15. Pick Mariscal if you want to walk home from a night out, and La Carolina if you want quiet mornings and a train at the door.

Plaza Foch was once known as Quito's zona rosa, and a 2025 report described closed bars and empty terraces after the 2019 national strike and the pandemic 18. Music and some bars remain on Calama and Reina Victoria, and prices have dropped, with one bar quoted at USD 3 for entry with a drink in 2025 18. La Carolina is the city's financial district, so its streets are calmer after office hours 15.

The Centro Histórico suits visitors who want the Serenata Quiteña, the Sesión Solemne at Teatro Sucre and La Ronda within walking distance 5 4. Expect road closures there on the evening of the Sesión Solemne: in 2023 closures began at 18:00 around Guayaquil, Montúfar and Manabí streets 7.

Rates for December 2026 were not published at the time of research, so compare current listings. Walking between the three areas is tiring at this altitude, so choose one base and use the Metro or a taxi for the rest 14.

  • Mariscal: nightlife, taxis at the door, noisier nights.

  • La Carolina and Iñaquito: Metro access, quieter evenings.

  • Centro Histórico: colonial streets, early closures, steep walks at altitude 14.

Tip: Book as early as you can and ask for a room away from the street if you plan to sleep before midnight, because chiva speakers run late in the Mariscal.

Will Your Phone Cope With the Crowd on Avenida Amazonas?

A mobile connection at the Gran Ronda Quiteña is worth arranging before you fly, because a procession on Avenida Amazonas from El Ejido to Naciones Unidas concentrates the same crowd that made 2025's festivities reach 294,000 participants 10 9. Public Wi-Fi is unlikely to survive that load.

A local eSIM keeps maps, ride-hailing and your group chat running without hunting for a SIM shop. Install it at home on Wi-Fi, switch it on when you land, and keep your home line for calls; the Ecuador eSIM page explains the plans.

What you will actually use data for during Fiestas de Quito:

  • A map for avenue closures and Metro exits, which change by the hour on event days 7.

  • A shared location pin with your group before you enter the crowd.

  • A ride-hailing app after the Metro closes at 22:00 on Sundays 20.

  • Video: a 30-second clip of a float can use a large share of a daily allowance.

Keep a download of the offline map for Quito, a screenshot of your hotel address and a power bank. Cold evenings drain batteries faster, and a dead phone at 21:00 on Avenida Amazonas leaves you with no map and no ride.

Tip: Turn off automatic video upload while you are in the crowd and upload later at the hotel.

Is Plaza Foch Safe After Dark During the Fiestas?

Plaza Foch needs caution after dark, especially after midnight and when you have been drinking. A June 2025 report said police seized at least three knives a day around the plaza, that 12 officers patrolled the perimeter, and that people drinking on the street were frequent robbery targets 18.

Quito Turismo framed the 2025 programme around safe, family-friendly activities and responsible drinking 8. The municipality also polices alcohol in public. During the 2025 fiestas it removed 2,381 street drinkers, issued 2,960 warnings for misuse of public space and deployed 1,760 officials, including police, soldiers and firefighters 9. It discarded 6,614 bottles of alcohol and removed 1,649 units of liquor from the market, a reminder to buy drinks only from licensed vendors 9.

Pickpocketing rises wherever crowds do, on the Metro, around the Basílica and at the chiva departure points. A crowd that is happy and slow-moving still hides quick hands, and the busiest minutes are the ones when a float passes and everyone raises a phone at once.

  • Carry one card and a small amount of cash, not your whole wallet.

  • Keep your phone in a front pocket or zipped bag, and avoid filming near the edge of a crowd.

  • Use ride-hailing from the door of your venue instead of walking to find a taxi.

  • Stay in lit streets and leave Parque Gabriela Mistral early, since problems there rise after midnight 18.

  • Do not accept drinks poured from unmarked bottles.

Note: Quito's emergency line is ECU 911; save the number and your hotel address before you go out.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, the ticketing listing shows the Gran Ronda Quiteña as a free event, open to all ages, on Avenida Amazonas from El Ejido to Naciones Unidas on Saturday 5 December 2026 10. The listing says it includes chivas, comparsas, allegorical floats, town bands and free canelazo. The start time is shown two different ways, so check the page again close to the day.

The anniversary is 6 December, which falls on a Sunday in 2026, so the local rest day is expected to move to the Friday before or the Monday after 12. In 2025 the holiday moved from Saturday 6 December to Friday 5 December, and it applies only to the Metropolitan District of Quito 12. Confirm the 2026 date with the municipality.

Yes, public chivas sell single seats at fixed departure points, and the price was USD 5 per person in 2025 1. Departure points that year included Avenida Naciones Unidas e Iñaquito, Parque Bicentenario, Tribuna del Sur and the Plataforma Gubernamental Sur 1. Expect a queue, because in a past edition one visitor waited about an hour and a half 13.

Pay only an operator you can verify, and distrust prices far below the market. In 2025 the president of the Asociación de Chivas San Francisco de Quito reported about 20 complaints in a week about fake offers on Marketplace and Facebook at USD 120 to 150 for 45 people, against a normal season price of USD 350 to 500 1.

No, not for a late finish. In December 2025 the Metro ran 07:00 to 23:00 on Saturdays and 07:00 to 22:00 on Sundays 20. The Gran Ronda Quiteña on Saturday 5 December 2026 is listed into the evening, so plan a taxi or ride-hailing app home, and check for extended hours on event days 10.

Plan for maps, ride-hailing, messaging and short videos rather than a fixed number of gigabytes. Streaming or uploading video from the Gran Ronda Quiteña uses the most data, so upload clips later on hotel Wi-Fi. Install an eSIM before you fly, activate it when you land, and keep a screenshot of your hotel address.
