Why Does a Flat Battery Spoil a Parade Morning on M.L. Quezon Avenue?

A parade of higantes is a moving target, and the phone in your pocket is how you stay with it. The Municipality of Angono announced the fluvial parade for 23 November 2026 but had not published a grand parade date in the same announcement, and the official calendar of activities was due at the 31 October 2026 launch 1. The parade itself is held on the Sunday before the 23 November feast 2, so the day, the start time and the route can all change between booking a bed and arriving. In 2017 the Sunday parade started at 7:00 a.m. from Rainbow Village and SM Center Angono and ended at the Angono Municipal Compound 4.

Angono is a lakeshore town of 134,975 people at the 2024 census 7, and on parade day the streets fill with barangay groups, marching bands and visitors from Metro Manila. The giants block sightlines, the road closes to cars, and the water thrown during the basaan reaches phones and pockets 8. A dead battery means no map, no message from your group and no way to check whether the procession has already left the church. Charge fully, carry a power bank and keep the phone in a zip bag.

How Do You Find Your Group When Ten-Foot Giants Block the Street?

A higante stands about 10 to 12 feet tall 13, so a friend a few metres away can vanish behind a papier-mâché head. Share a live location before the parade starts and agree on one fixed fallback point, such as the plaza near the Angono Municipal Compound 4.

Can You Book a Ride Home After the Fluvial Procession?

The fluvial procession on Laguna de Bay follows the Mass and the parade on feast day 1 13. Roads near the shore stay busy afterwards, so walk away from the crowd before opening a ride-hailing app. Rome2Rio lists a taxi or private car trip from Angono to Pasay at about 27 minutes 10.

Will Your Phone Survive the Basaan Water-Dousing?

Basaan means water is poured on participants for good fortune during the parade 8, and a 2006 account records revellers chanting "Tubig! Tubig!" and a water truck hosing down the crowd at the plaza 13. A waterproof pouch is a better bet than a pocket 14.

When Is Higantes Festival in 2026?

Higantes Festival 2026 is expected to put its giant papier-mâché figures on the streets of Angono, Rizal, on Sunday 22 November 2026, the day before the feast of San Clemente on Monday 23 November 2026 2 14. The Municipality of Angono has announced the fluvial parade for 23 November 2026, but its announcement does not give a date for the Higantes Grand Parade 1.

The date moves because the town ties the parade to a weekday, not to the calendar. The Municipality of Angono says the parade of giants is held on the Sunday before the town feast on 23 November 2 3. When 23 November falls on a Monday, as it does in 2026, the Sunday before it is 22 November 14. In 2017 the parade ran on Sunday 19 November, four days before a Thursday feast 4. Wikipedia and a travel listing both give 22 to 23 November for the feast days 7 16.

The festival is wider than one weekend. The 2026 edition is a month-long celebration of Angono's culture, arts and traditions in November, with the theme "HIGANTE AT SINING: Ugat ng Kalinangan, Sagisag ng Pagkakaisa" 1. Key dates announced so far 1:

  • 31 October 2026: official launch at the Angono Gymnasium, where the calendar of activities for November is unveiled 1

  • 15 November 2026: promotion of a BSP commemorative coin at Plaza Rizal 1

  • Sunday 22 November 2026: expected Higantes Grand Parade 2 14

  • Monday 23 November 2026: fluvial parade for Saint Clement 1

Tip: Treat Sunday 22 November 2026 as expected until the municipality posts its calendar on its official Facebook page 1. Book a refundable room and keep Monday 23 November free for the feast.

Is Watching the Higantes Parade in Angono Free?

Yes, the parade is a street event, and the municipality has published no ticket or entrance fee for the 2026 edition 1. The Municipality of Angono itself describes the festival as a secular celebration it started to thank its patron saint 3, and the 2017 parade ran on public roads between Rainbow Village and the Angono Municipal Compound 4.

Money goes elsewhere. Transport is the main cost, and the festival month adds trade exhibits, art shows and an itik (duck) cooking contest 11. Check the official calendar for any ticketed concert or pageant, because those programmes change from year to year 1.

Free does not mean unregulated. In 2023 the mayor ordered local authorities to prepare for the grand parade and prohibited street drinking sprees 11. A special non-working holiday was declared for 23 November 2023 12, so check whether a proclamation exists for Monday 23 November 2026 before you plan the return trip.

Where to stand matters more than what to pay:

  • Along M.L. Quezon Avenue in San Isidro, the town centre, where one guide places the main parade 17

  • Near the Angono Municipal Compound, where the 2017 route ended 4

  • Outside the Diocesan Shrine and Parish of Saint Clement in Poblacion Ibaba, built in 1865 5

Tip: Do not climb on a higante or pull at its costume, and keep the procession lane clear when marshals ask 14. The bearers inside cannot see much.

How Do You Get to Angono From Metro Manila?

Angono is about 29 km east of Manila, and the usual route is a jeepney, a UV Express van or a car along Manila East Road 7 9. By car the drive takes about 48 minutes 9, and Slicktrip puts Angono about an hour from Manila's airport by car outside rush hour, with no rail service 19.

On public transport, Wikivoyage lists a bus route ending in Angono from Quiapo via San Juan and Pasig, and jeepneys from Cubao and from Starmall in Mandaluyong 9. Rome2Rio gives a cheaper breakdown 10:

  • Jeepney from Quezon Avenue and R. Tolentino in Angono to EDSA and Shaw Boulevard: about 1h 22m, every 10 minutes, about USD 1 10

  • UV Express from Taytay New Market to Cubao: about 30 minutes, every 30 minutes 10

  • MRT-3 from Santolan to Magallanes Station: about 17 minutes 10

  • Taxi or private car from Angono to Pasay: about 27 minutes 10

Traffic thickens on parade Sunday, so leave earlier than for a normal weekend 14. A 2017 route ran from Rainbow Village and SM Center Angono to the Angono Municipal Compound 4. In 2006 one visitor parked at the town plaza, about 1 km from the church 13.

The Angono Tourism Office sits in Barangay San Isidro, and the municipal line is 8651-0062 6 20. Save the number before you leave.

Tip: Start from Metro Manila before dawn on the parade Sunday. A 7:00 a.m. start was announced in 2017, and jeepneys fill early 4.

What Happens From the Higantes Parade to the Fluvial Procession on Laguna de Bay?

The feast has two peaks: the Sunday parade of giants and the fluvial procession for San Clemente on 23 November, with a Mass and water-dousing in between 1 2 8. The Higantes Festival is a secular celebration started by the Municipality of Angono to thank Saint Clement, the town's patron 3.

On the parade day, barangays send their own higantes, often themed on a local trade, and a village known for balut once fielded a figure with a duck-shaped head 8. Bearers dance the figure so that it sways, lifts and turns 8. The giants now include local and national officials, Angono myths and the vegetables of the folk song "Bahay Kubo", along with small higantitos 3. The 2017 parade featured more than 100 higantes 4.

Around them marches the town. The parehadores are a marching band with girls in colourful costumes and wooden slippers, carrying the sagwan, a boat paddle that stands for devotion to Saint Clement, and shouting "¡Viva, San Clemente!" 8. A 2006 visitor also saw altar boys leading, images carried on andas, and bamboo arches with hanging ornaments raised as each image passed beneath 13.

On feast day, a Mass at the Diocesan Shrine and Parish of Saint Clement in Poblacion Ibaba comes first. The church was built in 1865 and finished a year later, and its novena Mass begins nightly at 7:00 p.m. 5. After the parade the images go to the shore of Laguna de Bay and board a floating bamboo pagoda for the fluvial procession 13.

Tip: Wear quick-dry clothing and shoes you can walk in for hours. Expect to be splashed, even in the crowd 8 14.

Where Did Angono's Higantes Come From?

Angono's higantes come from two stories: a folk memory of mocking landowners and a post-war art tradition. Angono folklore says the higante symbolised agrarian protest in the last years of Spanish colonial rule, when the town was a hacienda 2 3.

Far Eastern University professor James Owen Saguinsin offered a different reading. He suggested that no literal giant existed and that locals meant Karias Tangkad, a tall hacienda caretaker, and that the word is linked to "higanti", revenge 3. He also argued that the papier-mâché giants began after World War II, when painter Carlos "Botong" Francisco asked the first higante maker, Artemio Tajan, to add festivity to the fiesta 3. A different account credits Karias Tangkad with the first higante, and credits the artist Perdigon Vocalan with conceiving the festival 15.

Building one takes skill. A figure of about three metres takes roughly a month 8. The frame is bamboo or rattan with thin iron bars, the head is moulded and covered in layers of paper, and two bearers work inside, seeing through eyeholes in the head and extra holes in the clothes 8 15. Heights of 10 to 12 feet are the figure most sources give 13 15.

Meaning has shifted. The municipality now presents the higante as a symbol of residents' aspiration to excel and contribute to the town 3, and its tourism office calls it an identity for Angono and Rizal 20.

  • Higantes often come in family groups: father, mother and child 15

  • Smaller figures are called higantitos 3

  • Angono is home to National Artists Carlos "Botong" Francisco and Lucio San Pedro 3 5

Note: Sources disagree on the origin. Treat the folklore and the post-war account as two versions, and ask a local maker which one they tell.

How Warm and Wet Is Angono in the Third Week of November?

November in Angono is warm, with a mean daily high of about 30°C and a low of about 22°C, and about 47 mm of rain on roughly 10.4 days 7. Those figures are climate averages for the month, not a forecast for 22 or 23 November 2026.

Rain falls on about 10.4 days of the month 7, so carry a light poncho. The bigger discomfort is humidity combined with standing in the sun for hours on a closed street. The festival adds water: basaan means you will be splashed whatever the weather 8.

Crowds peak on parade Sunday, when barangay groups, bands and visitors fill the town 2 14. The feast day on Monday is more devotional, with a Mass and the fluvial procession 1.

Plan around the weather:

  • Arrive early, before the 7:00 a.m. start reported for 2017, if the 2026 route follows a similar pattern 4

  • Carry water, a hat and sunscreen; one guide also suggests a small towel 14

  • Keep a dry change of clothes in a bag, because the basaan soaks 8

  • Wear closed shoes: streets are wet and crowded

Bad weather can disrupt outdoor events, so check the Municipality of Angono's official Facebook page for notices before leaving Metro Manila 1.

For emergencies, the municipal page lists Angono Police at 8651-0061 and the MDRRMO at 8451-1711 6.

Tip: Treat the outdoor events as weather-dependent. If the Sunday parade is moved, keep a spare day free rather than rebooking everything.

Is It Better to Sleep in Angono or Commute From Metro Manila?

Sleep in Angono's town centre if you want to be on the street before the parade starts, or commute from Metro Manila if you want more rooms to choose from. Angono is about 29 km east of Manila, so a day trip is realistic 7.

Wikivoyage lists a handful of resorts and a bed and breakfast, among them a hillside resort with views of the Metro Manila skyline and a boutique resort in San Isidro 9. Listings are limited, and the town's capacity is small next to the festival crowd. A 2017 route began at Rainbow Village and SM Center Angono, so lodging near those landmarks puts you close to the start 4.

Your options:

  • Angono Poblacion: walkable to the church, the Municipal Compound and the plaza 4 5, but the closest rooms go first

  • Nearby Rizal towns: Taytay and Cainta are on the jeepney and UV Express corridor 9 10

  • Metro Manila: a day trip with an early start; the jeepney to EDSA takes about 1h 22m 10

The date is not confirmed, so choose a free-cancellation rate until the municipality posts its November calendar 1.

The Monday feast shapes the stay. With the feast on Monday 23 November 2026, a two-night stay on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 November 2026 covers the parade, and a third night covers the fluvial procession 1.

Tip: If you stay in Manila, take the first jeepney or UV Express out on parade Sunday and arrive before the closures 4.

What Do You Eat Around Angono's Plaza During the Feast?

Eat the dishes Angono is known for: native Filipino cooking at a restaurant and art gallery on Doña Aurora Street, known for adobo kamaru and ginataang kuhol, then pancit Malabon and halo-halo on the main streets 9. Duck, or itik, is part of the festival too, because the festival month includes an itik cooking contest 11.

The balut link goes back to the giants themselves. A barangay known for the duck egg delicacy once made a higante with a duck-shaped head 8.

Where to find food 9:

  • A pancit Malabon shop on Quezon Avenue that opens at 7:00 a.m.

  • A halo-halo stand at Colonel Guido Road corner Guijo Street

  • A breakfast place on Colonel Guido Road that is open 24 hours, useful before a dawn start 9

  • Grill and eat-all-you-can restaurants along Manila East Road and Don V. Reyes Street 9

Food stalls on the parade route are common at Philippine fiestas. A guide for the festival describes vendors selling lechon, adobo and sinigang, though it gives no prices 14. Carry cash in small notes, as stall owners rarely take cards.

The Doña Aurora Street restaurant doubles as an art collection, which suits a town that calls itself the Art Capital of the Philippines and is the hometown of Botong Francisco and Lucio San Pedro 3 7 9. Eating there is as close as the festival gets to a sit-down tasting of local cooking, so give it unhurried time away from the route.

A practical order of the day: breakfast before the parade, snacks from vendors along the route, then a sit-down meal after the giants have passed.

Tip: Keep drinking water on you; the lake town is humid and the procession is long.

Will Your Phone Hold Up Along the Higantes Parade Route?

Plan for slow data along the Poblacion at peak hours, and download your maps beforehand. Angono is part of the Greater Manila Area 7, so networks cover the town, but a closed street full of people filming the same giants strains any cell.

What uses data during the festival:

  1. Checking the municipality's Facebook page for the parade date, route and closures, which change 1

  2. Sharing a live location when the giants block your view

  3. Booking a ride out after the fluvial procession

  4. Translating signs, menus and notices

  5. Uploading video, by far the heaviest use

Prepare before you fly:

  1. Download an offline map covering the Poblacion, M.L. Quezon Avenue and the lakeshore

  2. Screenshot your hotel address and your return route

  3. Check that your phone is unlocked and supports eSIM

  4. Install a Philippines eSIM at home and switch it on when you land

Ride-hailing is one of the heaviest needs afterwards: Rome2Rio lists Grab among the taxi operators for the Angono to Pasay trip 10, but closed roads near the shore can slow pickups, so walk out of the crowd first.

Save the municipal line, 8651-0062, and the emergency numbers on the official site before you go, since a busy network may not load the page when you need it 6. Keep your phone in a waterproof pouch because of the basaan 14, and bring a power bank. Data use depends on how much you film. Maps, chat and ride-hailing use little, while long uploads use far more.

Note: Hotel and café Wi-Fi rarely helps when every guest uploads video at once. Keep mobile data for navigation and upload clips later.

Frequently asked questions

The Higantes parade is the Sunday street parade of giants, while the feast of San Clemente is the town's patron feast on 23 November 2 3. The Municipality of Angono says the parade is held on the Sunday before the feast 2. For 2026 the fluvial parade is announced for 23 November and the parade is expected on 22 November 1 14.

Karias Tangkad was, in Professor James Owen Saguinsin's theory, a tall hacienda caretaker whom residents wanted revenge against, and the word “higanti” means revenge 3. Another account credits a person of that name with making the first higante 15. Sources disagree, so visitors will hear more than one version from locals.

Yes, if you have a spare morning. The Angono-Binangonan Petroglyphs are described as the oldest known art in the Philippines, with 127 engraved human and animal figures 9. Wikivoyage lists opening hours of 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. 9 18, but sources disagree on the fee, so confirm with the Angono Tourism Office on 8651-0062 6.

Not freely. In 2023 the mayor ordered authorities to prepare for the grand parade and prohibited street drinking sprees 11. The municipality can set similar rules for 2026, so check its official announcements before you carry a drink onto the route 1.

Yes. Basaan is the water-dousing ritual of the parade and the feast, linked to Pope Clement I, who is the patron saint of fisherfolk 8. In 2006 revellers chanted “Tubig! Tubig!” and a water truck hosed the crowd at the plaza 13. Wear quick-dry clothes and protect your phone 14.

Data needs depend mostly on video. Maps, chat and ride-hailing use little, while uploading clips of the giants on M.L. Quezon Avenue uses far more. With many visitors expected in the Poblacion on parade Sunday, upload on hotel Wi-Fi the next morning and keep mobile data for navigation and checking the municipality's updates 1.
