Finding your way when the roads close

At Batu Caves on Thaipusam the day is decided by what you can still reach. Several roads close around the temple, and the advice from local guides is to use public transport 7. Your phone becomes the map, the train timetable, the ride-hailing app and the meeting point all at once. The crowd is the real problem: the 2026 edition was expected to draw 2.5 million visitors to the caves on a single day 5. Tens of thousands of phones share the same few cell towers near the base of the steps, so a plan that depends on a live connection can stall exactly when you need it most.

Download the offline map of Gombak and Batu Caves before you leave the hotel. Save the KTM Komuter line you want and the station where you are meeting your group. Then keep a working data connection for the moments when a road, a platform or a lane has changed since you looked.

Matching a train to a night-long procession

The chariot leaves the Sri Mahamariamman Temple on the eve and the extra Komuter trains run through the night, so timings shift hour by hour. In 2026 KTMB added extra services after the last scheduled train, with 609 trips planned over four days 6. A live connection lets you check the next departure at Batu Caves station instead of waiting on a packed platform.

Booking a ride from Taman Wahyu or Sentul

Ride-hailing drivers cannot reach the temple gate on the main day. A local telecom guide suggests being dropped at Taman Wahyu or Sentul and walking the rest 5. You need data to pick a drop point, share your live location with a friend and book the return when the walk back finishes.

Paying for water, snacks and tickets

Komuter gates accept cashless payment only, including Touch 'n Go and cards 6. A connected phone lets you top up a wallet on the platform instead of queueing at a machine.

When Is Thaipusam in 2027?

Thaipusam in 2027 is expected on Friday 22 January 2027 in Kuala Lumpur, according to two calendar sources 1 2. Neither is an official announcement, so treat the day as expected until the Batu Caves temple management or the government confirms it. The eve, when the silver chariot sets off, is therefore expected on the night of Thursday 21 January 2027.

The date moves every year because it follows the Tamil lunisolar calendar. Thaipusam falls on the first full-moon day of the Tamil month of Thai that coincides with the Pusam star, and the festival's name joins the two words 3. That is why the date jumps between January and February on the Gregorian calendar.

If you searched for Thaipusam 2026, that edition was held on Sunday 1 February 2026, with a regional holiday in Kuala Lumpur 1. The 2026 festivities began on the night of 30 January 2026 with the chariot procession from the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple 5.

Thaipusam 2027 at Batu Caves falls on a Friday, which matters for crowds. Thaipusam is a regional holiday in Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Johor, Negeri Sembilan, Perak, Penang and Selangor 1, so expect families to travel in from all of them.

  • Expected festival day: Friday 22 January 2027 1 2

  • Expected chariot night: Thursday 21 January 2027 into the morning

  • Previous edition: Sunday 1 February 2026 1

Tip: Book flights and rooms against the expected day, then re-check the date about a month before travel.

Does Batu Caves Charge Anything to Enter During Thaipusam?

None of the sources checked for this page lists an admission ticket for Thaipusam at Batu Caves, and there is no booking system to join. Your costs are transport, food and anything you buy from the stalls. The official ticketing question therefore has no website answer: the festival is run by the temple and a taskforce, not by a box office.

What you do pay for is the journey. In 2026 the KTM Komuter and Rapid KL shuttle services to Batu Caves were free on 31 January and 1 February, funded at nearly RM1 million 6. Free rides are announced late, so do not assume they will repeat for the 2027 edition.

Inside the temple area, food is a blessing rather than a sale. Visitors are encouraged to accept free vegetarian food and water offered at stalls near the steps 5. Traders selling at the temple must sell vegetarian food only, and alcohol sales were banned around the temple in the 2023 edition 9.

The stalls along the access road sell Indian snacks, Hindu prayer items, household goods and toys 7. Prices are not published, so carry small notes and a cashless card for the train.

  • Admission ticket: none listed in sources checked

  • Komuter and shuttles in 2026: free on 31 January and 1 February 6

  • Food at the temple: vegetarian only, with free stalls 5 9

Note: Parking is unrealistic on the main day, so budget for rail fares rather than a car.

How Do You Reach Batu Caves by KTM Komuter on Thaipusam?

Take the KTM Komuter to Batu Caves station: it is the terminus of the Seremban line and about 20 minutes from KL Sentral 7. Batu Caves itself lies roughly 13 km north of central Kuala Lumpur 4, and several roads close for the festival, which is why guides send everyone to the rails 7.

From Kuala Lumpur International Airport, the KLIA Ekspres takes 28 minutes to KL Sentral and a single adult ticket costs RM55 11. At KL Sentral you change to the Komuter platform for Batu Caves.

The 2026 edition shows how the system stretches. KTMB ran round-the-clock trains from 30 January to 2 February 2026, with 28 stations open 24 hours and 609 trips planned 6. Extra services started after the last scheduled train, from 9:15pm on the Pulau Sebang line and 10:25pm from Port Klang 6. Rapid KL also ran free shuttle buses every 10 minutes from Pasar Seni, LRT Gombak and MRT Kampung Batu 6.

Gates are cashless, so carry a Touch 'n Go card, a Komuter Link card or a contactless bank card 6. Scan out through the automatic gate at Batu Caves station, which the free-fare scheme also required in 2026 6. The platform fills quickly on the main day, so let one or two trains pass if the crowd on the stairs looks tight, and move along the platform rather than stopping at the exit.

  • KL Sentral to Batu Caves station: about 20 minutes 7

  • KLIA Ekspres to KL Sentral: 28 minutes, RM55 single 11

  • 2026 shuttles: 30 buses every 10 minutes 6

Tip: If you use a ride-hailing app, ask to be dropped at Taman Wahyu or Sentul and walk the rest 5.

What Happens on the Silver Chariot Night From Jalan Tun H.S. Lee?

A century-old silver chariot leaves the Sri Mahamariamman Temple on Jalan Tun H.S. Lee on the eve of Thaipusam and travels a 16 km procession to Batu Caves 7. It carries the idols of Murugan with his consorts Valli and Deivanai, and the walk through central Kuala Lumpur lasts through the night.

Devotees break coconuts along the route to symbolise the destruction of ego and pride 7. The chariot is Murugan coming out to meet his people, so elderly and disabled devotees offer fruit, flowers or milk from the roadside, because the compound at Batu Caves is too crowded 7.

For Thaipusam in 2027 at Batu Caves, the chariot is expected to set out on the night of 21 January 2027. The 2026 edition started on the night of 30 January 2026 5. No source gives a fixed departure hour for 2027.

The best place to watch is not Batu Caves. Stand along Jalan Tun H.S. Lee near the temple or at the Pasar Seni end, where you can see the chariot at walking pace without the crush of the steps.

  • Route length: 16 km from the temple to Batu Caves 7

  • Rituals on the way: coconut breaking, fruit and milk offerings 7

  • What it represents: Murugan going out to greet devotees 7

Tip: Rapid KL's Pasar Seni City Hub shuttle served this part of the route in 2026, every 10 minutes 6.

How Do Kavadi Bearers Climb the 272 Steps?

Kavadi bearers climb the 272 steps to the Temple Cave in a dedicated lane and finish at the shrine of Lord Murugan 7. A kavadi is a burden carried as a vow: the simplest is a bent wooden or steel frame balanced on the shoulders, while the heaviest is the vel kavadi, which can reach 2 metres tall and 30 kg, fixed by skewers and hooks 3.

Most devotees carry the paal kudam, a pot of milk, instead. They prepare through a vegetarian diet, fasting, prayer and cleanliness, and drumming and chanting help them enter a trance 3. The story behind it tells of Idumban, a disciple who carried two mountains, Sivagiri and Sakthigiri, and was humbled by Murugan 7.

The festival honours Murugan's victory over the demon Surapadman with the vel, the spear given to him by his mother Parvati 3. The golden statue of Murugan outside the caves, unveiled in January 2006, stands about 42.7 metres tall 4.

If you are climbing, stay in the left lane to enter the cave and use the right lane to leave 7. Concrete steps replaced wooden ones in 1940 4.

  • Steps to the Temple Cave: 272 4

  • Heaviest kavadi: up to 2 metres tall and 30 kg 3

  • Statue height: 42.7 metres 4

Tip: Step aside for anyone in a trance or carrying a kavadi, and never photograph a devotee mid-ritual at close range 5.

What Is the Weather Like at Batu Caves in January?

January in Kuala Lumpur averages a daily high of 32.6 °C and a low of 23.8 °C at the airport station, according to 1991 to 2020 climate normals 12. Rain is common: about 226.7 mm falls across 13.6 rainy days in the month 12. Plan for heat in the afternoon and a shower at any hour.

The heat compounds on a long climb. The crowd is dense on the 272 steps 4, and the cave mouth is humid. Early morning is cooler, which is why many devotees begin the climb at dawn.

Crowds peak on the main day itself. In 2026 Tourism Malaysia expected 2.5 million visitors to Batu Caves on 1 February 5. An earlier guide counted around 2 million in a single day 7. Expect similar pressure on Friday 22 January 2027.

Arrive early. Dawn rather than midday gives you the climb before the heat and before queues at the steps build up. The limestone hill gives little shade on the open stairs, so a cap or umbrella helps, and the cave itself stays humid even when the sun is behind cloud.

Wet steps are the other risk. A shower turns the painted concrete slippery, and flip-flops with no grip are a poor choice on the way down. Rain also pushes the crowd under the cave roof and the stall awnings, which slows the lane near the entrance. Carry a light rain cover for the phone and leave larger umbrellas at the hotel, since they catch on kavadi frames and on other people in a tight lane.

  • Average January high: 32.6 °C 12

  • Average January low: 23.8 °C 12

  • January rainfall: 226.7 mm over 13.6 rainy days 12

Tip: Carry a small towel, water and a rain cover for your phone.

Where Should You Stay for a Pre-Dawn Start at Batu Caves?

Stay near KL Sentral, because every route to Batu Caves starts there and the station stays open through the festival night. Staying close to the Komuter platform beats staying near the caves, where roads close and ride-hailing cars cannot reach the temple gate 7.

In 2026, 28 KTMB stations stayed open 24 hours and trains ran from 30 January to 2 February 6. If KTMB repeats that for 2027, a room near KL Sentral lets you leave at 3am with a short walk.

  • KL Sentral and Brickfields: close to the Komuter platform, good for first-timers.

  • Pasar Seni and Chinatown: walkable to the silver chariot route on Jalan Tun H.S. Lee.

  • Gombak and Sentul: nearer the caves, quieter, fewer hotels.

Rooms near the temple route sell out as soon as the date is firm. Book once the date for the 2027 edition is confirmed, and choose free cancellation. No source gives room prices for the festival, so compare rates yourself.

The airport link makes arrival easy: the KLIA Ekspres reaches KL Sentral in 28 minutes 11. Trains run every 20 minutes all day, every day, including public holidays, from about 5:00 until midnight 11. That means a late flight into Kuala Lumpur still gets you to a bed near the station before the pre-dawn start.

Choose a room you can leave on foot with a small bag. Heavy luggage does not belong in the crowd, so ask the hotel to hold bags if you check out on the festival morning.

Tip: If you want to see the chariot start, stay in the Pasar Seni area. If you only want the climb, stay near KL Sentral.

Will Your Phone Work in the Batu Caves Crowd?

Mobile data is patchy at the base of the Batu Caves steps when the crowd peaks, because the 2026 edition drew an expected 2.5 million visitors in one day 5. No source measured signal at the site, so plan for slow speeds. Download offline maps, the Komuter line and a meeting point in advance.

The solution is a data plan you set up before you land. A roaming eSIM for Malaysia can be installed at home and switched on when you arrive at KL Sentral, so you are not searching for a shop at the station on the night of the chariot. See the Malaysia eSIM page for what plans cover.

For group trips, share live location with everyone before the climb. Fix a meeting point away from the steps, because the lanes up and down the steps are separate and crowded 7.

The most useful screens to keep one tap away are the Komuter line map, a chat with your group and a saved photo of the hotel address. If the network drops, these still open. A short text with your location costs far less data than a video call, and it usually gets through when voice calls do not.

  • Before leaving: offline map of Gombak, saved Komuter timetable

  • At the station: top up your cashless card

  • In the crowd: use text messages rather than calls

Tip: Keep your phone in a zipped pocket, since the lanes are tight and the monkeys that live around the caves grab loose items 4.

What Should You Wear Up the 272 Steps?

Wear loose cotton clothing with no shorts, comfortable cheap shoes and a small bag 7. Dress modestly 5. Batu Caves is a working Murugan temple, so clothes that cover the knees and shoulders are the safe choice.

Shoes left at the base can be hard to find again, so bring a spare pair or leave footwear at a stall 7. A small sling bag with water, a face cloth and hand sanitiser works better than a backpack in the lanes 7.

Many devotees wear yellow or orange. You do not need to copy them, but skip very short or tight clothes. Do not point your feet toward shrines or offerings 5.

Cotton dries faster than synthetics when the climb makes you sweat or a shower arrives. Keep valuables in a zipped inner pocket, and wear shoes that are easy to slip on and off, because you remove them at the cave shrine. Sleeves that reach the elbow also protect shoulders from the sun on the open stairs, and a thin scarf can double as a head cover or a sweat cloth.

  • Loose cotton shirt or top, no shorts 7

  • Comfortable cheap shoes, plus a spare pair 7

  • Small bag with water, face cloth, sanitiser 7

  • Rain cover or light poncho for a possible shower, since January sees 13.6 rainy days 12

Note: Step aside for devotees in a trance and do not take selfies with them mid-ritual 5.

Which Other Cities Hold a Thaipusam Procession of Their Own?

Penang and Singapore both hold their own processions, on the same Tamil calendar day as Batu Caves. In Penang the silver chariot leaves the Nagarathar Kovil Veedu Temple and travels 9 km to the Nattukottai Chettiar Temple on Waterfall Road 10. It was built in Karaikudi, shipped to Penang in January 1894, stands 7.07 metres tall and weighs five tonnes 10.

Two oxen pull the chariot in turns, with each pair covering less than 1 km 10. In 2025 the outbound journey began at 7am on 10 February, the eve 10. More than 100 free vegetarian stalls served the route 10.

Singapore follows a different pattern. On the main day the procession starts at the Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple on Serangoon Road and ends about 4 km away at the Sri Thendayuthapani Temple on Tank Road 8. On the eve, the Punar Pusam procession carries the Murugan image in a silver chariot to Keong Saik Road and back 8.

  • Batu Caves: 16 km chariot route, 272 steps 7 4

  • Penang: 9 km chariot route 10

  • Singapore: about 4 km procession 8

Both cities treat the day as a procession through the streets rather than a single climb. In Singapore, devotees choose offerings by their vow: a milk pot, a pole with a pot hung at each end, or an ornate structure supported by spikes 8. Many fast for about 48 days beforehand 8. Live music has been allowed at designated points along the Singapore route since 2016 8.

Tip: Penang is quieter than Batu Caves, so it is easier to see the chariot up close.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, it is expected to be a regional holiday on Friday 22 January 2027 in Kuala Lumpur 1. It is also observed in Putrajaya, Johor, Negeri Sembilan, Perak, Penang and Selangor 1, so offices and schools are closed and trains are busy. Check the official gazette closer to the date.

Yes, visitors can climb the 272 steps, but a separate lane is kept for kavadi bearers 7. Stay in the left lane to enter the cave and the right lane to leave 7. Expect a slow queue, dress modestly and step aside for any devotee in a trance 5.

No source gives a fixed hour for 2027, but the chariot leaves the Sri Mahamariamman Temple on Jalan Tun H.S. Lee on the eve of Thaipusam and covers 16 km to Batu Caves 7. In 2026 the procession began on the night of 30 January 5.

In 2026 it did, from 30 January to 2 February, with 28 stations open 24 hours and 609 planned trips 6. Nothing has been announced for 2027 yet, so plan around the usual timetable and check KTMB notices in January. Free fares applied on 31 January and 1 February 2026, but offers like that are announced late 6.

Not around the temple. Traders inside the temple area may sell only vegetarian food, and liquor sales were banned in the 2023 edition 9. Many devotees also keep a vegetarian diet while fasting for the festival 3. Eat at the roadside vegetarian stalls and carry your own water.

No source measures data use at Batu Caves, so plan around what you do: maps, train timetables, ride-hailing and payments. Heavy video drains a plan fast, so download offline maps and save photos for the evening. A roaming eSIM set up before you land keeps you connected in the crowd.
